Equality Utah has launched a new effort to provide statewide non-discrimination protections based on sexual orientation and gender identity in workplace and housing. Getting Down to Business is a comprehensive campaign with three synergistic strategies: fact gathering, dialogue and statewide outreach.
“Equality Utah is committed to securing equal protections for all Utahns,” stated Brandie Balken, Executive Director. “We know that access to equitable employment and housing are the foundation of a fair and just community. We have successfully built public support for statewide non-discrimination policy, and we believe information about the positive economic implications will be an effective tool in moving these important policies forward.”
Fact gathering entails, polling, collation of information provided by states with inclusive non-discrimination policies, and surveys of executives in targeted business fields that Utah is eager to attract: technology, investment banking and film production.
Dialogues will occur with communities, business leaders and Chambers of Commerce about the economic and social benefits of implementing statewide employment and housing protections. These conversations will help leaders understand how businesses perceive the Utah climate for diverse employees and families.
Statewide outreach will continue, encouraging passage and implementation of non-discrimination ordinances in municipalities throughout Utah. Stakeholder meetings will also be held that will foster a collaborative approach to equality for the LGBT community.
Equality Utah will issue a report on our findings to government, business, and community leaders in advance of the 2012 session of the Utah Legislature.
